Sanctuary

Despite our best training and rehabilitation efforts, some mules in our care will never be able to leave Lost Meadows because of a chronic medical condition, extreme trauma from abuse, or aggression that makes them unsuitable for adoption

They have no other alternative place to live besides Lost Meadows. Here, they always receive the same routine care as our other groups and are well looked after.

We call these mules our sanctuary mules.

Currently, 55 out of 147 of our mules are considered sanctuary mules.

Each one could use a sponsor to help with their monthly cost of care. For $25 a month, you can sponsor the mule of your choice.

You will receive our yearly calendar, 1 annual sponsorship certificate, and recognition on our website for your sponsorship. You can also join the private Facebook group called Mule Sanctuary to see regular photo updates of your sponsored mule.

Shown below are the sanctuary mules who need a sponsor:

MELVIN, WAITING FOR SPONSORSHIP

is an 11 year old John who was running wild on public land and was captured by the government. Melvin can be friendly, but he was gelded late in life so he still retains the behavioral qualities of a stallion. He is also a master escape artist, so he stays at LMMR where we know he can be safely contained. Click here to sponsor Melvin for $25 monthly.

CLEMENTINE, WAITING FOR SPONSORSHIP

is a 20 year old mule who was rescued from McKinney, Texas. Clementine is extremely sweet, but extremely shy towards new people. She could be adopted someday, but it would take a committed person. Click here to sponsor Melvin for $25 monthly.

SOPHIE, WAITING FOR SPONSORSHIP

is a 6 year old Molly who was a rescue transfer from Dansville, Michigan. Sophie is a master escape artist, so she stays at LMMR where we know she can be safely contained. Click here to sponsor Melvin for $25 monthly.

is a 17 year old John who was running wild on public land in Nevada and was captured by the government.

TOBY, SPONSORED BY KATHY BENNETT

THOMAS, SPONSORED BY HAYLEE MENNE

is a 14 year old John mule who was rescued in California. He was originally rounded up and branded by the BLM in Oregon. A local rescue bought him from an HMA, but had extreme difficulty handling and training him. They surrendered him to Lost Meadows where he has made enough progress to be petted on the head and neck.

LUALA, SPONSORED BY COURTNEY ELIZABETH

is a 25 year old Appaloosa mare horse who was dumped on our property in November 2020. Our focus is mules, but Luala was so underweight and her hooves were so poor that the best decision for her was to stay with us and recover.

ARTHUR, SPONSORED BY ELLEN JONES

is a John mule who was rescued in Chapel Hill, TN. Our initial behavioral assessment concluded that Arthur would be a sanctuary mule for the time being, but since then we have been able to take small steps towards working with him.

T.J., SPONSORED BY DAWN REICHERT

HOWIE, SPONSORED BY DAVID CLARIS

RUBY, SPONSORED BY ROBIN BISHA AND CYN HUDDLESTON
